CDA Enterprises

There is a widening economic gap between the middle class and the poor in Bangladesh. The middle class increasingly have control over the market which is making them richer whilst making the poor people poorer. For this reason CDA founded a number of small enterprise activities. The objective of these activities is to ensure its customers receive a fair price for their product, hence reducing the power of the middle class. An additional and significant benefit of the enterprise activities is they require both skilled and unskilled labour hence increasing employment opportunities for the local poor people.

Whilst the enterprise activities are currently small scale and self financing, they are not in a position to significantly contribute to the overall CDA program budget. However, due to a changing and more challenging donor funding situation, CDA plans to increase its capacity to become self sufficient within its current strategic period. This will require a large expansion in CDA enterprise activities. New RGA’s will be carefully selected that will simultaneously provide revenue to CDA whilst benefiting the local community and economy. It is anticipated that the RGA’s will be integral to CDA’s program for example sourcing raw materials from local farmers hence helping to establish livelihoods. In this manner the CDA beneficiaries will benefit twice – firstly in supplying resource (labour or produce) to the RGA’s and the associated benefits from an increased local economy and secondly as a beneficiary of CDA’s program which is supported through the RGA’s.

Some of CDA’s current enterprise activities are described below:

Husking Mill

CDA operates a manual husking mill with a daily production capacity of 1,200 Kg. The mill operates 365 days per year and employees both permanent and casual staff. CDA purchases paddy through the village markets creating livelihoods for rural farmers. Production figures for 2005 are shown below:

• Rice bought & sold 539 Tonne
• Rice processed 1,139 Tonne
• Wheat bought & sold 800 Tonne
• Employment created 8,640 Man days

Milk Chilling Centre

CDA purchases milk from local farmers and, after testing and chilling, packages some and sells to the local market whilst sending the rest to the bulk market. The chilling centre has a capacity of 500 litres per day. In 2005 a total of 172,800 litres of milk was chilled which directly benefited 20 families through milk supply and benefited a further 30 families benefited through the enterprise activities.

Publication and Packaging

CDA has a small offset printing press which has recently been refurbished and is now actively involved in the new publication and packaging enterprise. The press is capable of printing 100,000 pages per day and is a valuable resource for CDA’s advocacy and awareness publicity materials.

Nursery

CDA has a small nursery based at its central training centre, CTC. The nursery was founded to encourage CDA’s group members to establish tree plantations in the effort to improve environmental sustainability. The nursery has approximately 20,000 plants which it purchases as seedlings and sells in the market as small trees. Varieties include Mangoes, Jack fruit and lychee.
